The Travelling Geologist

I am Thru, the Travelling Geologist. Together with my partner, we are independent travellers who try to go on as many adventures each year as we can.

On this website, you can join us on our world travels and discover incredible places, incredible food, get our top tips to make and advice to make the most of your travels. We'll help you see the world like a globetrotter, save a lot of money compared to travelling with travel agencies, we'll tell you how to stay safe and have an amazing time!

I will also cover some of my other interests, like camping / tentboxing, science, geology and nature, hillwalking and hiking and FIRE related topics.

Thru

I was born in Iceland in 1984 and very early on developed a great love for all-things-travel. Back in 2001 or so, I started a website that was at the time called "Bakpokinn.com" (translates to "The Backpack" in English). The purpose of that website was initially to communicate all my different travel-hacks and budget travel tips to friends and family who kept asking me for advice and by creating the website, I could just refer them to there and they'd find all the info they needed.

After I moved to Scotland in 2016, it was time to blog in English rather than Icelandic, so this page is an offspring of that.

Joe

Joe is Scottish (though a mix of English and Irish too!) and from Glasgow. He's the reason why I ended up in Scotland and we've had so many adventures together. While I am the general travel guru in our relationship, planning our trips with precision, taking into account our personal wants and needs, he is definitely the Avios Wizard and has found us many-a-bargain to fly cheaply in business class!
